<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a movement detection device for highly precisely achieving movement detection by suppressing the detection leakage of movement. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The movement detection device 50 is provided with a movement detection circuit 10 and an area filter 20 and an edge decision circuit 30. The movement detection circuit 10 detects the movement of an input video signal for every pixel. The area filter 20 inputs the detection result of the movement presence/absence of every pixel by the movement detection circuit, and makes majority decision with respect to the number of pixels whose movement is present and the number of pixels whose movement is absent about peripheral pixels including a pixel under consideration, and re-decides whether each pixel is a moving image or a static image, and outputs the result. An edge decision circuit 30 decides the presence/absence of an edge by using the peripheral pixels including the pixel under consideration of the input video signal. On the basis of the decision result of the edge presence/absence by the edge decision circuit 30, the output of the decision result of the area filter 20 is made controllable to be turned on/off, and the decision reference (threshold) of the area filter 20 is made changeable.
