The device has an optical recording unit (4) for imaging projection recordings. Imaging units are arranged such that a central beam (5) of a X-ray source (2) and a central beam (6) of the recording unit are brought for congruence. A processing unit produces a volume image (9), and a producing unit produces a three dimensional surface image (8). An image overlapping unit is provided for overlapping the volume image and the dimensional surface image. A difference determining unit determines a difference between the volume image and the surface image. An independent claim is also included for a method for generating a three dimensional representation of an object.
