PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for breaking a brittle material by means of which a brittle material with a scribed line formed therein can be broken with high accuracy while the material is continuously moved in a direction whether nearly horizontal or vertical. SOLUTION: The apparatus has at least two sets of moving rollers for holding the brittle material from both sides, and breaks the brittle material which is provided with a scribed line and continuously moved by the moving rollers. The scribed line is formed in a direction nearly orthogonal to the advancing direction of the brittle material. Between the two sets of moving rollers, there are installed pressurizing rollers imparting pressure from the side of the brittle material opposite from the side in which the scribed line is formed. The brittle material is broken along the scribed line by being pressurized with the pressurizing rollers at the time when the scribed line passes through between the two sets of moving rollers.
