<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device for a discharge lamp in which a cover case can be connected to a base case without looseness and that is miniaturized, and an luminaire equipped with this lighting device for the discharge lamp. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The lighting device for the discharge lamp 1 includes the base case 2 made of metal which has a bottom 2a and a pair of sidewalls 2b, 2b and in which an engaging receptacle part 8 and a communication hole 10 are respectively formed on the pair of sidewalls 2b, 2b, an insulating sheet 3, a lighting circuit 4 which is arranged at the bottom 2a of the base case 2, and a cover case 5 which has a top plate part 5a, a pair of side plate parts 5c, 5c which are formed on both sides along the longitudinal direction of the top plate part 5a, an engaging part 7 to engage with the engaging receptacle part 8, and a support member 9 of which top end side 9b enters the inner face side of the base case 2 through the communication hole 10 of the base case 2 and presses the side fringe 6aa of a circuit board 6 of the lighting circuit 4 on the inner face to support the circuit board 6.
