<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp and a lighting fixture with a vessel at a part covered with an external electrode with little risk of being damaged by melting in case of increasing power supply, and further, with little risk of fall of luminous efficiency. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The discharge lamp 1 includes a vessel 2, an external electrode 3 arranged at each end of the vessel 2, and an electricity switching control part 4. The external electrode 3 includes an upper electrode piece 31 and a lower electrode piece 32 capable of electricity switching. The electricity switching control part 4 detects each temperature of the first electrode piece 31 and the second electrode piece 32 in the vessel 2 by a temperature detecting part 43, and, when temperature detecting data detected exceed the electrode piece setting temperature, switching of electricity conduction is carried out between the upper electrode piece 31 and the lower electrode piece 32.
