<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem, wherein even though a conventional video camera, when it is dividing a scene into a plurality of chapters frequently, sets the head frames of the chapters as thumbnail images for use in identifying the respective chapters, a head frame does not always show the contents of a scene and then it is difficult for the user to find a target chapter from the scene divided into the plurality of chapters, using only the information on the head frames of the chapters. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A recording and reproducing device includes a moving image recording means for recording moving image video information; a chapter setting means for setting a chapter in the moving image video information; a still image recording means for recording the still image video information to be used as a thumbnail image of the chapter; and a means for associating the still image video information with a thumbnail image of the moving image video information.
