<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device, achieving high contrast in a display image plane. <P>SOLUTION: This projection type display device 1 includes: a light source 10; a lighting optical system 20; a light modulating element 30 for lighting; a relay-color separation optical system 40; a light modulating element 50 for display; a composite optical system 60; a projection lens 70; and a signal processing circuit 90. Light from the light source 10 is modulated based on a black-and-white image signal D1, which is a luminance component of an image signal D0, by the light modulating element 30 for lighting to generate image light L3 for lighting. The image light L3 is separated into image light beams L4R, L4G, L4B of three colors by the relay-color separation optical system 40, and then respectively modulated based on an original color image signal D2 corresponding to the image signal D0 in the light modulating element 50 for display to form image light beams L5R, L5G, L5B for display. The image light L3 is taken as lighting light, whereby the luminance distribution of the image light L3 is superimposed to form image light beams L5R, L5G, L5B. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
