<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing optical film capable of improving unevenness of polarization degree on both ends, in particular, of the width direction of film stock in the manufacturing of an optical film, and capable of obtaining a superior contrast characteristic when the optical film is used for a liquid crystal panel. <P>SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the optical film, which includes a transparent film and a birefringent layer having a refractive index distribution of nx=ny>nz, includes a uniformizing step of an orientation axis for drawing the transparent film in the width direction with a draw ratio in the range of 1.05 to 1.25 times and a step of forming the birefringent layer on the drawn transparent film. Therein, nx, ny and nz respectively present refractive indexes of X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis, wherein the X-axis is the axial direction along which the refractive index becomes maximum in the plane of the birefringent layer, the Y-axis is the axial direction vertical to the Y-axis, and the Z-axis presents the thickness direction vertical to the X-direction and the Y-direction.
