<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: compositions comprising adefovir dipivoxil (AD) of a new form having desirable properties for large scale synthesis or for formulation into therapeutic dosages; AD having good melting point, and/or flow or bulk density properties, which facilitate manufacturing and formulating compositions containing AD; a storage-stable form of AD; AD which can be readily filtered and easily dried; highly purified AD having at least about a 97% (w/w) purity and preferably at least about 98%; to eliminate or minimize by-products made during AD synthesis; and a method for purifying AD that avoids expensive and time-consuming column chromatography.
