<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce content using a recording medium having a different region code without requiring a connection environment to the Internet or the like, while preventing date information from being altered in an unauthorized manner. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A DVD player 1 has a reading means for reading out digital data recorded on an optical disc, and a playback means for reproducing a video signal or an audio signal using the read digital data. The DVD player 1, when a device region code thereof is different from a medium region code, determines whether a valid period is set in the medium region code. When determining that a valid period is set in the medium region code, the DVD player 1 determines whether it is within the valid period, based on a criterion date based on date data recorded on the recording medium.
