<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic polymer with a small number of reaction processes. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This method for producing an aromatic polymer involves a polymerization step of polymerizing a monomer represented by a general formula (1) in the copresence of a base and a first transition metal salt, or a polymerization step of polymerizing a monomer represented by the general formula (1) in the presence of a base, wherein E<SP>1</SP>is a group represented by -(P(=O)(OR<SP>1</SP>)(OR<SP>2</SP>)) (R<SP>1</SP>represents a hydrogen atom, an inorganic cation or an organic cation; R<SP>2</SP>represents an alkyl group or an aryl group). In the general formula (1), the groups represented by X<SP>1</SP>and X<SP>2</SP>each independently represents a condensable reacting group; Ar<SP>1</SP>represents an aromatic group which may have a substituent.
