<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive image reading device where unnecessary memory securing is not performed, the reading time is reduced, and conveyable original size does not depend on the length of the conveying passage. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reading device includes: a reading means for reading an image on the original, while conveying the original; a storage means for storing image data read by the reading means; a detection means for detecting the original size, while conveying the original. An area for storing the image data is secured in the storage means, prior to starting the reading. The image reading device also includes a changing means for changing the reading start propriety determining reference of the subsequent original, in response to the original size of the preceding original detected by the detection means.
