<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer can transfer a large amount of data in a short time while using an inexpensive USB controller device. <P>SOLUTION: The printer 10 and a personal computer 20 are connected through a USB cable (81), and when the power switch of the printer 10 is turned ON (70), the printer 10 is activated in a storage device state. In the state, the data size of a transmission packet from the printer 10 is set to 64 bytes (83), and the data size of a reception packet is set to 16 bytes (84). Meanwhile, after the printer is switched to a printing device state (86), the data size of the transmission packet from the printer 10 is set to 16 bytes (89), and the data size of the reception packet is set to 64 bytes (88).
