<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of reducing a time loss due to a forced toner consumption mode operation and satisfactorily maintaining cleaning performance of a transfer member cleaner, with respect to the image forming apparatus which employs a transfer device for transferring a toner image on an image carrier to a recording body held between the image carrier and a transfer member, or to the transfer member itself and has a forced toner consumption mode. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a toner consumption mode that forms a toner consumption pattern outside an image forming region on a photoreceptor and consumes the toner in the developing device. An intermediate transfer member or a transfer conveyance belt as the transfer member is attachable and detachable to and from the photoreceptor and, as the toner consumption mode, a first toner consumption mode that performs toner consumption when the transfer member is brought into contact with the photoreceptor and a second toner consumption mode that performs toner consumption when the transfer member is separated from the photoreceptor are disposed.
