PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of successively detecting a residual amount of developer even when a rotational speed of a developer feed member is changed. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a developer residual amount detection means which applies AC voltage between a developer carrying member and the developer feed member and detects the residual amount of the developer in a developing container by detecting voltage induced between them. In the apparatus, before the developer residual amount detection means is operated, at least the developer feed member out of the developer carrying member and the developer feed member is rotated for a predetermined time at the predetermined pre-detection rotational speed prior to the execution of a detection operation, and then the developer residual amount detection means is operated to detect the residual amount of the developer.
