<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image forming apparatus that avoids upsizing caused by providing a contact for communication with respect to a memory chip. <P>SOLUTION: Developing cartridge 6 are provided according to four photosensitive drums 4 arranged in parallel in a front-and-rear direction. A translation member 17 opposed collectively to all the developing cartridges 6 is provided on the side of the developing cartridges 6. The developing cartridge 6 is moved between a contact position in which a developing roller 7 contacts the photosensitive drum 4 and a separated position in which the developing roller 7 is separated from the photosensitive drum 4 by a linear reciprocating movement of the translation member 17 in a prescribed direction. The memory chip 23 is arranged at a part opposed to the translation member 17 on the housing 8 of the developing cartridge 6.
