<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the trouble of storing an extension tray each time an operator stores a manual feed tray into an image forming apparatus body, and to prevent damage to the extension tray and the image forming apparatus body when the operator forgets to store the extension tray. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This apparatus has a mechanism to release an extension guide 41 from its retention state through an interlock with an operation of storing the manual feed tray 42 into the image forming apparatus body 4 from the sheet feeding position A2. When the operation of storing the manual feed tray is performed, therefore, the extension guide 41 is released from its retention with respect to a cover member 3 and falls to be stored at a storage position, due to its own weight during the storage operation.
