PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic timepiece having a position detecting means for reducing the current consumption, by shortening the operating time of the position detecting means, when the position of a gear is detected. SOLUTION: This electronic timepiece includes a scoop wheel 275, rotated by an hour/minute hand motor 26; a 24-hour intermediate wheel 281 to which the rotation is transferred and that has a rotation speed slower than that of the scoop wheel 275; an hour/minute-hand optical sensor for detecting a detection hole 275A of the scoop wheel 275; and a 24-hour hand optical sensor for detecting a detection hole 281A of the 24-hour intermediate wheel 281. The hour/minute;hand optical sensor is set so as to detect the detection hole 275A, when the scoop wheel 275 further rotates by a predetermined angle, after the detection hole 281A has been detected by the 24-hour hand optical sensor. Therefore, the 24-hour-hand optical sensor is operated each several steps to detect the detection hole 281A, and then the hour/minute-hand optical sensor is operated for each step to detect the detection hole 275A, thereby the detection frequency is reduced and the current consumption can be reduced.
