PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a condensation reaction method which is excellent in both reaction efficiency and handleability, low in environmental load, and low in cost. SOLUTION: The condensation reaction method is one for condensing (A) a phenol compound with (B) a carbonyl compound, wherein the condensation catalyst used is a cation exchange resin produced by a method including the following step (b): (b) the step of lowering the content of a leachable compound having a specified chemical structure to 3,000μg or smaller per gram of a monovinylaromatic monomer and a copolymer crosslinked with a crosslinking aromatic monomer.
