<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of certainly securing a suitable paper feeding height according to the kind of paper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the printing instruction of a plurality of sheets of papers is received (S11), a variation amount of a position of the uppermost surface of the paper P is detected (S12), and the number of sheets of feeding of the papers P is counted by a counter (S13). The kind of the paper P is detected by the variation amount of the position of the uppermost surface of the paper P and the counted number of sheets of feeding of the papers P (S14). A feed voltage corresponding to the kind of the paper P is fed to a lift-up motor 26 (S15). A bottom plate 25 is ascended by the rotation of the lift-up motor 26 according to the feed voltage (S16).
