<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickness determining device for a bundle of paper sheets, determining the thickness of the sheet bundle accurately without causing a user to change his/her posture during operation, despite its simple structure. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the upper part of a staple setting magazine 8, a cover 35 equipped with: a curved portion overhung when viewed from the front; and an inspection window formed in the curved portion is provided, and a stationary base 2 is furnished with a resilient member arranged in slide contact with the inner surface of the curved portion, wherein the part of the resilient member, visible through the inspection window is made different according to the relative position of the magazine 8 with the stationary base 2.
