A component, especially the bipolar plate (20) of a fuel cell, will be coated. Coating material (21) is placed over the region to be coated (22). It is bonded by adiabatic plating. Simultaneously during this plating operation, adiabatic re-shaping of the coating or of the surface (24) of the component takes place. This introduces a structure into the surface or the coating. The structure is a channel structure. The coating, which is made from gold or platinum, is bonded to the surface at a velocity exceeding 10 m/s.
