The emergency operating method involves injecting the fuel with a fixed injection period. A number of revolutions of a combustion engine (1) are controlled by the variation of fuel supply to and fuel drain from pressure reservoir (3), such that it accepts a certain target rotational speed or lies within a certain target rotational speed areas. The emergency operation is guided by engine idle controller, which regulates variation of fuel supply and fuel drain in place of injection period.
