<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of shortening the refreshment mode time in a simple configuration. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 10 is configured to be switchable between an ordinary printing mode and a refreshment mode for polishing the drum surface 21a by rotating a friction roller 33 in a state with a toner interposed between a photoreceptor drum 21 and the friction roller 33. The friction roller 33 has the roller surface 33a moved relatively with respect to the drum surface 21a by a predetermined velocity ratio according to the rotation drive by the driving force from a motor 23. A controller unit 50 controls the motor 23 so that the drum surface 21a of the photoreceptor drum 21 is moved by a higher rate in the refreshment mode than in the ordinary printing mode.
