The method involves detecting objects (O1, O2) e.g. road sign, in a surrounding of a vehicle (F) by a radar system (1), and detecting a progress of a road (R). A driver assistance system (3) is controlled based on relevance and/or classification of the objects and/or the progress. The relevance of the objects is determined from the data, detected by the radar system, with respect to present situation (S) of the vehicle. An image of the objects is produced for examining the relevance. Object data and surrounding data are determined from the image, and are used for classifying the objects.
