<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely retain a column body and a shock absorbing member inside a cylindrical member by press-fitting them easily and appropriately. <P>SOLUTION: After a shock absorbing mat 3 is wrapped around a catalyst carrier 2, the catalyst carrier 2 is placed in a way that its shaft is positioned on a vertical line VL. A guiding tool 6 has a hollow guiding unit, which communicates the hollow of a cylindrical member 4 and opens downward when the cylindrical member 4 is placed on the top surface, and a taper unit, in which the cross-section area of the hollow guiding unit gradually expands toward the bottom. The guiding tool 6 and the cylindrical member 4, on which the guiding tool 6 is placed, are arranged on the upper side of the catalyst carrier 2 in a way that the shaft of the cylindrical member 4 is positioned on the vertical line. The guiding tool 6 and the cylindrical member 4 are driven relatively in the direction wherein they come close to each other relative to the catalyst carrier 2, and the catalyst carrier 2 and the shock absorbing mat 3 are press-fitted into the cylindrical member 4 while the taper unit 6b of the guiding tool compresses the shock absorbing mat 3. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
