PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid useful as a modifier for various polymers and an intermediate for various functional chemicals without using a copper catalyst by hydrolyzing a halogenoisophthalic acid derivative with an alkaline aqueous solution. SOLUTION: 5-Hydroxyisophthalic acid is produced by hydrolyzing a 5- halogenoisophthalic acid derivative of the formula (R1 and R2 are each H or a 1-6C alkyl; X is a halogen) preferably in the presence of a catalytic metal other than copper (preferably a metal such as zinc, cadmium, silver or gold and/or its compound) preferably at 100-300 deg.C. The alkali of the alkaline aqueous solution is preferably lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, or the like. The catalytic metal is preferably a metal catalyst supported on a carrier. The objective compound can be produced by this process on an industrial scale at a low cost causing little problem of waste water treatment. |
