A lower frame 14 of a stretcher is secured to a forwards holder 90 and a rearwards clamp mechanism 100 mounted on an ambulance floor. The upper frame is held fast to the lower frame by plate locks 42 holding the upper frame 12 to the lower frame 14. A hydraulic actuator 16 holds the other ends of the stretcher down. The plate locks can be released and the hydraulic actuator can raise the upper frame when the lower frame fast from the ambulance floor. The stretcher may be wheeled and the locks may include a ratchet mechanism.
