PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that a focus evaluation value has an upper limit due to the restriction of the configuration of an electronic camera (for instance, the number of bits of the data of the focus evaluation value), so that a situation where the calculated focus evaluation value overflows can occur for instance and further, when each of the focus evaluation values calculated between an infinity position and a closest position is extremely small, a significant difference between the focus evaluation values is not obtained and a situation where a focusing position is not properly set can occur for instance. SOLUTION: The image signal based on the number of first pixels of image signals produced by an imaging means in the initial position of a lens is selected and the focus evaluation value is calculated by the selected image signal.
