<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly switch a printing mode in an image forming apparatus which carries out printing by transferring a toner image formed by developing a latent image to a recording medium after forming the latent image by scanning light beams on a latent image carrier. <P>SOLUTION: In high resolving printing, the action of forming the latent image to an effective image region by using the light beam SL1 which scans a first scan region in a direction (+X) as a light beam for latent image formation, and the action of forming the latent image to the effective image region by using the light beam SL2 which scans the first scan region in a direction (-X) as a light beam for latent image formation are alternately repeated. Thus, the so-called two-way scan mode is carried out, whereby the latent image is formed by a high resolution. On the other hand, in low resolving printing, the latent image is formed by scanning only the light beam for latent image formation SL1 on a photoreceptor.
