<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool with a hard coating layer exhibiting excellent chipping resistance in high-speed and high-feed cutting of high-strength ductile cast iron. Ž<P>SOLUTION: As a hard coating layer, an innermost layer composed of TiN, an inner layer composed of high nitrogen TiCN, an inner adherence layer composed of TiCo or TiCNO, an intermediate layer composed of α-type Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, an outer adherence layer composed of TiCO or TiCNO, and an outer layer composed of a laminate of high carbon TiCN and high carbon ZrCN are formed on the surface of a tool base body by vapor deposition. The surface of the hard coating layer is subjected to dry or wet blasting, thereby to smooth the surface of the hard coating layer and to reduce the residual stress.
