PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a carbon nanotube capable of removing end caps of the carbon nanotube and impurities in the carbon nanotube by oxidation, and capable of repairing defects of the carbon nanotube generated by the oxidation and the carbon nanotube. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the carbon nanotube involves: after a first oxidation for heating in the atmosphere soot containing a carbon nanotube generated by arc discharge, a first acid treatment for immersing the resultant material in an acid; after a second oxidation for heating it at a temperature not lower than the temperature of the first oxidation in the atmosphere, a second acid treatment for immersing the resulting material in an acid, thereby removing the impurities in the single carbon nanotube and the end caps of both ends of the single carbon nanotube; and then vacuum-heat-treating the resulting nanotube to repair the defects of the carbon nanotube generated in the oxidations.
