Partial oxidation of an alkylaromatic compound in the gas phase under the use of catalyst, whose catalytically active mass contains a multimetal oxide compound (I), is claimed. Partial oxidation of an alkylaromatic compound in the gas phase under the use of catalyst, whose catalytically active mass contains a multimetal oxide compound of formula (Cu aMo bM cO d.eH 2O) (I), is claimed. M : at least one element comprising Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, W, Re, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ag, Zn, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, B, Al, Ga, Si, Sn, Pb, P, Sb, Bi, La or Ce; a/b : 0.1-10; c : less than 0.1, where a+b+c is 1; d : number that is determined by the valency and frequency of the various elements of oxygen; and e : 0-20. An independent claim is included for the gas-phase oxidation catalyst comprising catalytically active mass.
