DISCHARGE LAMP LIGHTING DEVICE AND ILLUMINATION DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device in which a protective function at the end of life does not malfunction in the case where a dimming level is changed.

SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device with a protection means EL is configured to light a discharge lamp FL by an output of an inverter circuit 1 via a resonance circuit 2, employ a preheating circuit 3 having a resonant element to continuously preheat filaments f1, f2 of the discharge lamp FL, and control switching of the inverter circuit 1 to reduce or interrupt outputting to the discharge lamp FL if a detection section 7 for detecting the end of life of the discharge lamp FL detects the end of life of the discharge lamp FL. The device further comprises an operation inhibiting means SW1 for inhibiting operation of the protection means for a predetermined period of time if a variation range of a DC voltage of a dimming section 8 is no less than a predetermined value when the output of the discharge lamp FL is changed by the dimming section 8.
