<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an error stop when it is turned out that paper is emptied after start of feeding of the next paper, and to improve productivity of a print job. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This paper feeder is provided with a paper empty detecting means 25 detecting that the paper in a paper feeding section 2a is emptied, and a paper near empty detecting means 23 detecting that the residual amount of the paper in the paper feeding section 2a is reduced below a prescribed amount. When the reduction in the residual amount of the paper is detected by the paper near empty detecting means 21, feeding of the next paper is started after a timing capable of confirming that the paper in the paper feeding section 2a is not emptied based on an output from the paper empty detecting means 23 after the start of feeding of the last paper. When the reduction in the residual amount of the paper is not detected by the paper near empty detecting means 21, feeding of the next paper is started at a timing earlier than that in the case where the reduction in the residual amount of the paper is detected by the paper near empty detecting means 21.
