摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly having sufficient water retention ability and high battery characteristics even under low humidification conditions. <P>SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the membrane electrode assembly includes a step of applying catalyst ink containing particles carrying catalysts, a high polymer electrolyte, and a solvent on one face of a base substrate, a step of holding a pair of the base substrate applied with the catalyst ink and a high polymer electrolyte membrane configured such that a catalyst ink applied face and the high polymer electrolyte membrane face each other, a step of transferring the catalyst ink applied on the base substrate to both sides of the high polymer electrolyte membrane, and a step of peeling off the base substrate. A catalytic layer is provided on both sides of the high polymer electrolyte membrane characterized in that a surface roughness of a catalytic layer surface formed on the high polymer electrolyte membrane after peeling of the base substrate is within a range of 0.1-1.00 &mu;m, and a 85&deg; gross value (JIS Z 8741) of the catalytic layer surface is within a range of 10-80%. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
