<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manual input device for an automobile, capable of improving rotation operability by moving a dial itself to a plurality of positions and holding it, so as to change-over an operation function, and also imparting a rotation function in terms of moderation to the dial. <P>SOLUTION: A manual input device includes: the dial which is moved and held at prescribed positions by a moving and holding mechanism, and is operated by rotation; a position detecting means for detecting the dial holding positions; and a rotation amount converting means for converting the amount of rotation of the dial into an electric signal. The rotation moderation mechanism is arranged so as to impart the rotation function in terms of moderation to the rotation operation of the dial. The rotation moderation mechanism includes: a moderation rod to be fixed to a part close to a through-port where an operation axis to support the dial is put through; and a disk shape moderation board where a ball in the moderation rod is moved by snapping abutment.
