<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of easily illuminating the periphery of a projection surface even under dark environment, and its control method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When a power supply key of a control panel 22 or a remote control device 23 is operated in such a state that a DVD playback part 25 reproduces DVD content, the projector 1 performs different operation in accordance with a result of detection by an illuminance sensor 33. To put it concretely, when ambient brightness is equal to or above predetermined brightness, a control part 20 stops reproduction of the DVD content, and then turns off a light source 11 to make the projector 1 shift to a standby state. Meanwhile, when the ambient brightness is under the predetermined brightness, the projector 1 projects an image (illumination image) obtained by superposing a message on a white plain image from an image projection part 10 and illuminates the periphery of the projection surface S as well as temporarily stopping reproduction of the DVD content.
