PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a coating reducing crater wear and providing advanced wear resistance during cutting under high speed conditions. SOLUTION: The surface-coated cutting tool has a base material and the coating formed on the base material, wherein the coating comprises one or more layers, at least one of which is a hard oxide coating layer containing at least Al and Zr. The hard oxide coating layer has a composition structure such that the hard oxide coating layer contains the maximum points of Al and Zr contents at which the Al and Zr contents are maximized along its layer thickness direction, respectively, wherein the maximum points of Al and Zr contents exist repeatedly, an Al content ratio Al/(Al+Zr) at the maximum point of Al content is 0.99≤Al/(Al+Zr)≤0.9999 in atomic ratio, and a Zr content ratio Zr/(Al+Zr) at the maximum point of Zr content is 0.001≤Zr/(Al+Zr)≤0.2 in atomic ratio.
