<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing newsprint paper having high opacity after printing with high loading of a filler, and readily regulated in whiteness and hue, and to provide the newsprint paper. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the newsprint paper having a whiteness of 50-65% includes coating base paper formed by internally adding the filler to paper stock with a surface treating agent, and carrying out drying, wherein the filler to be a main constituent is colored to 60-85% whiteness. Furthermore, the newsprint paper is provided. In addition, the filler is preferably colored with a colorant for increasing the hue b* of the filler according to JISZ8729, in particular, the filler is preferably calcium carbonate.
