PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a buried pipe locating method suitable for locating a position of a pipe such as a gas pipe buried under the ground or in a building body, and a buried pipe locating device. SOLUTION: A vibration generating device 2 having a super magnetostrictive element as a vibration source is placed on a surface of the ground at a buried pipe estimation position (position A) and generates a vibration to the ground, and an area around the buried pipe estimation position is scanned. Meanwhile, a receiving device 3 searches a vibration wave that arrives by propagating in a pipe from the surface of the ground, by means of a pick-up 3a provided at a vertical pipe position 6 (position B). A movement of a level indication in a display section 3e of the receiving device 3 is traced in accordance with the scanning by the vibration generating device 2, and a position indicating a maximum level is determined as a pipe buried position. The position is marked on a road and is described in a map. The above process is sequentially performed on the road at a predetermined interval so that the buried positions over the entire road in the longitudinal direction can be grasped.
