PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for cleaning automobile exhaust gas in which rhodium in an atomic state is carried in a sufficiently and highly dispersed state, and having sufficiently high catalytic activity.

SOLUTION: The catalyst for cleaning automobile exhaust gas is provided with a carrier and rhodium carried on the carrier in the atomic state using a carboxylic acid rhodium complex, 50at% or more of rhodium being carried on the carrier as single atoms of rhodium or a diatomic cluster of rhodium.
