<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a subengine driven type air conditioner for a vehicle having a simple constitution to simultaneously satisfy reduction of starting torque of a starter motor and prevention of liquid compression of a compressor. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In this air conditioner 1, a subengine 3 for an air conditioner is provided, and the compressor 7 is directly connected and driven by the subengine 3. The compressor 7 is provided with a discharge valve switching mechanism 29 capable of switching a discharge valve 24 to a load state/unload state, and is provided with a control device 30 for switching the discharge valve switching mechanism 29 to the unload state/load state in conjunction with an ON/OFF operation of the starter motor 6 for starting the subengine 3.
