<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL device which is excellent in emission efficiency and life characteristics by inhibiting the erosion of an ITO, and to provide an method for manufacturing the organic EL device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An organic electroluminescent device 1 is formed by partitioning, by a bulkhead layer 24, an organic electroluminescent element in which a first electrode 10, a hole injection layer 32, an intermediate protective layer 41, a light emitting layer 30A, and a second electrode 50 are laminated on a substrate 20 in this sequence. The hole injection layer 32 is formed of a non-acid solution by using the organic electroluminescent device 1 in which the intermediate protective layer 41 is formed of an electron-accepting metal oxide with a work function larger than 4.3 eV.
