<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the waste of an empty space produced when an existing two- or multi-stage parking device is changed to the other type of two- or multi-stage parking device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The two- or multi-stage parking device comprises upper and lower multi-stage pallets 5, 7 so driven as to be lifted and allowing a vehicle 3 to get thereon vertically from a lane 1 or to get off vertically to the lane 1 when positioned at a predetermined loading and/or unloading height. A vehicle storage pit 13 is formed at a position lower than the loading and/or unloading height. With multi-stage pallets 5, 7 used as a basic configuration, a predetermined quantity of the basic configurations are disposed in the lateral direction of the pit 13. In the method for modification of the two- or multi-stage parking device, the device is changed to the other type with the pit 13 left undisturbed to use the lateral empty space produced in the pit 13 as a car parking and/or a bicycle parking space for at least one of light cars, motorcycles, and bicycles or as a warehouse.
