PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display smooth gray level without generating pseudo contour by performing high-speed and stable write operation. SOLUTION: A protective layer of a plasma display panel includes a base protective layer formed of a thin film containing a metal oxide, and a particle layer formed by depositing agglomerated particles each formed by agglomerating a plurality of single-crystal particles of magnesium oxide on the base protective layer. A panel drive circuit is configured to drive the panel by configuring one field period by temporally disposing a second subfield group of two or more subfields having a write period Tw for erasing wall charges for generating a sustain discharge, and a sustain period Ts for emitting a discharge cell by generating a sustain discharge after a first subfield group of two or more subfields having an initialization period Ti for forming a wall charge for generating a write discharge, a write period Tw for forming a wall charge for generating a sustain discharge, and a sustain period Ts for causing a discharge cell to emit light by generating a sustain discharge.
