PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of stabilizing image density, preventing the occurrence of image irregularities, and performing a high quality image formation by preventing partial sticking of a toner external additive to the surface of an intermediate transfer member. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes an image reader 8 for reading a document image, an intermediate transfer belt 10 for temporarily bearing a toner image, and a density detection sensor 16 for detecting densities on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 10. If differences between the densities on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 10, detected using the density detection sensor 16, exceeds a reference value, the density distribution of the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 10 is recognized as an image output to paper P. Also, the intermediate transfer belt 10 is rotated while a specific toner pattern is formed on an area of the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 10 corresponding to a low density area of the image within a period of non-transfer to the paper P.
