PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for properly detecting a locally dark structure of an eye or the like of a face image as an edge.

SOLUTION: This image processing method comprises: acquiring an image consisting of a plurality of pixels; detecting, based on the acquired image, the edge with a recessed structure wherein pixel values are locally smaller than pixel values of the periphery; and generating an edge image based on the detected edge with the recessed structure.
