<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device having an improved display quality. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates facing each other, a liquid crystal cell interposed between the pair of substrates and including a liquid crystal cell, a pair of polarizing plates disposed on front and rear surfaces of the liquid crystal cell, an optical element disposed in the front of the liquid crystal cell, and a light source disposed at the rear of one of the pair of polarizing plates, which is disposed on the rear surface of the liquid crystal cell.
