<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder injection type engine and a method for controlling the same, capable of achieving extreme retard combustion under high back pressure and reducing an HC emission amount at a start as much as possible. <P>SOLUTION: A cavity 30 to which fuel spray injected from a fuel injection valve 10 is blown in is formed on a piston 7, and a disturbance means such as a step 31 for decelerating or stopping the blown-in fuel spray is provided in the cavity 30. The arrangement position, arrangement posture, nozzle structure and nozzle hole shape etc. of the fuel injection valve 10 are set so that fuel spray injected from the fuel injection valve 10 is directed to an ignition plug 20 and includes a lead fuel spray 101 component having penetration with length passing over the ignition plug 20 and a main fuel spray 102 component directed to the piston 7.
